THE Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center (SMC) has rapidly established itself as a global hub for generative AI innovation, reflecting China’s strategic ambition to lead the sector. Since its launch in September 2023, the center has drawn nearly 400 AI enterprises to Xuhui District, creating a dynamic ecosystem of talent, technology, and investment. At its core, the SMC serves as a one-stop platform connecting cutting-edge research with real-world applications. It showcases China’s latest AI infrastructure advancements, including hybrid computing chips and general-purpose GPUs. In early 2024, the center introduced China’s first “AI computing power supermarket,” providing developers with on-demand access to diversified computing resources. The SMC operates on a unique “challenge-and-grant” system, where industry leaders pose R&D challenges for startups to solve — accelerating breakthroughs in fields like healthcare, autonomous driving, and beyond. Over 90% of the SMC’s founding teams come from top tech firms or elite universities, while 80% of startups specialize in vertical AI models, blending academic rigor with industry expertise. This high-caliber talent pool has made the center a magnet for entrepreneurs, now home to 255 AI companies and 34 certified large models. The innovation center also houses a 500-square-meter AI product experience store, featuring over 200 AI-powered products, 90% of which are made in China. This space gives AI companies a direct channel to test-market products, gather real-time user feedback, and refine their offerings. Visitors can interact with cutting-edge tech, from smart wearables and productivity tools to health devices and audio innovations. (SD-Agencies) |
