SHEKOU is gearing up to host an exhilarating Dragon Boat Race on May 24, when drums will beat, boats will surge forward, and the spirit of teamwork and tradition will take center stage on the picturesque Zhongxin River.

The highly anticipated event promises to bring together paddlers and spectators from diverse backgrounds for a vibrant morning filled with thrilling competition and cultural celebration.

One highlight of the race is an international team of 11 expat residents of Shekou, organized by the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats (Shekou MSCE). United by their passion for the sport and community engagement, this diverse group has put in considerable effort to prepare.

Over the weekend leading up to the event, they had two intense training sessions, honing their coordination and paddling skills. The team members’ determination showcases their commitment to the event and the inclusive spirit of Shekou’s international community.

Its fifth edition this year, the Dragon Boat Race in Shekou not only honors traditional customs that are part of the Dragon Boat Festival, but also serves as a platform for intercultural exchange and strengthens bonds between the local and expat communities.

Participating teams include local enthusiasts, corporate groups, and international competitors, creating a colorful, dynamic contest that embodies teamwork, perseverance, and celebration.

Dragon Boat Festival, a prominent and festive Chinese holiday that originated at least 1,500 years ago, features dragon boat races and rice dumplings.  Falling on May 31 this year, it is one of the three most important festivals in China, along with the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
