Eva Wu, G8吴佳瑞 New Zealand, famously the only snake-free country on Earth, lies in the southwest Pacific Ocean. This idyllic summer getaway boasts a vibrant capital, Wellington, and countless attractions waiting to be explored. I had the pleasure of visiting two years ago, and its charm still lingers in my memory. For shoppers and food lovers, Queenstown is a must-visit destination — worth at least a day or two of your itinerary. My time there was filled with delightful discoveries, like Cockie Time, a dessert shop offering everything from biscuits and ice cream to cakes and milkshakes. It also doubled as a souvenir spot, where tourists often snapped photos in front of its quirky centerpiece: a vintage car sliced in half. Another gem was the Remarkable Sweet Shop, a candy paradise perfect for picking up gifts. Among their vast selection, I adored the mint chocolates — refreshingly sweet without being cloying — and another variety studded with chocolate beans, as visually appealing as it was tasty. The staff’s warmth made the experience even better; they encouraged me to sample countless flavors before deciding. Queenstown’s culinary and retail scene didn’t stop there. I browsed a boutique selling handmade dolls and locally made cosmetics infused with essential oils, their natural fragrances subtly soothing. The town’s restaurants also impressed, though New Zealand’s culinary stars extend beyond its famed lamb and kiwi fruit. Its seafood is exceptional: From plump shrimp and briny clams to buttery fish and tender sea cucumbers, the ocean’s bounty shines. Supermarkets, too, are treasure troves. Shelves brim with high-quality dairy products like milk powder, baby formula, and artisanal cheese. Don’t overlook the bakery section, where rustic breads and pastries pair perfectly with the country’s juicy, sun-ripened fruits. For a true taste of local life, I’d suggest visiting farmers’ markets, where vendors proudly offer organic produce and homemade treats. |
