Joe Hisaishi’s film music for Children’s Day
    2025-05-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THIS Children’s Day, fans of Hayao Miyazaki’s animation works can relive the magic of those heartwarming scenes and childhood fantasies — perhaps with their own little ones — at a concert featuring the enchanting film scores of Joe Hisaishi.

Under the baton of Liu Yu, conductor of the Shenyang Symphony Orchestra and associate professor at the School of Music, CUHK-Shenzhen, the 50-member Unicorn Symphony Orchestra will take audiences on a nostalgic journey through timeless music.

Fans will recognize beloved melodies from films such as “Castle in the Sky,” “Spirited Away,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “Princess Mononoke,” among others.

Founded in 2016, the Unicorn Symphony Orchestra comprises outstanding graduates from prestigious music schools. With over 200 concerts to its name, the orchestra has extensive experience collaborating with renowned musicians and conductors worldwide.

The concert will also feature violinist An Haojia as a soloist. An is the youngest violin lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has performed as a soloist with major Australian orchestras.

Conductor Liu, who earned a soloist degree (equivalent to a doctorate) from Berlin University of the Arts in 2014, previously served as director of orchestral instruments at Northeastern University’s School of Art. He is also a guest conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra and permanent conductor of the Changchun Film Studio Orchestra.

Time: 3 p.m., June 1

Venue: Shenzhen Poly Theater, Nanshan District (深圳保利剧院)

Metro: Line 2, 11 or 13 to Houhai Station (后海站), Exit E(Li Dan)
