Wang Jingli wangjingli0715@163.com FOR Darya Koleda, China has been home for almost her entire life. A Russian citizen, she moved to Guangzhou with her parents at just 4 months old, growing up immersed in the dynamic culture of southern China. This unique upbringing gave her a front-row seat to the region’s explosive growth, sparking a particular fascination with Guangzhou’s innovation-driven neighbor. “Shenzhen’s growth is astonishing. I have always wondered what life here would be like,” Koleda explained. When it came time for university, the choice was clear. Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU), the first Sino-Russian joint university, felt tailor-made for her. “It was the perfect fit — it bridges my two homes,” she said. That role as a “bridge” quickly became more than a metaphor. During her freshman year, Koleda took on the challenge of leading the university’s International Student Association (ISA). Her bicultural fluency proved to be her greatest asset. “Living in China almost my entire life, I became familiar with the local culture and mindset,” she reflected. “This background proved incredibly helpful when communicating with the Chinese administration and student association.” The position was a practical education in leadership, teaching her to navigate cross-cultural communication while balancing a demanding academic schedule. Now, Koleda is channeling that same drive toward a career in technology. An applied mathematics major with a passion for programming discovered in high school, she sees Shenzhen as the ultimate launchpad. With tech giants like Tencent and Huawei defining the city, she is focused on her goal of becoming a skilled programmer, with branches like artificial intelligence and game design holding a strong appeal. “Shenzhen’s reputation as a young, innovative, and tech-driven city aligns perfectly with my interests,” said Koleda. While her sights are set on the future, she makes a point to embrace the present. In her free time, she explores Shenzhen’s charm on foot, from strolling through parks to marveling at the miniature global landmarks in Window of the World. She also dives into campus life, participating in everything from cultural celebrations to outdoor games. Eager to connect further, she recently joined the Z10 Club, an initiative by EyeShenzhen to link international students with unique local opportunities. “The Z10 Club has already offered amazing opportunities to international students in Shenzhen. Activities included meeting iShowSpeed and touring the Huawei office. I am genuinely excited to be part of a group that connects students to such enriching events, and I can’t wait to see what’s next,” said Koleda. “It’s not just fun — it’s about creating memories,” she added. “I know graduation will come, so I cherish every moment.” For Darya Koleda, Shenzhen is more than just a fast-paced city of opportunity. It’s the place where her past, present, and future converge — where a young woman who bridges two worlds can build one of her very own. |
