SHENZHEN-BASED BYD took delivery of its sixth vehicle carrier, the “BYD Changsha,” yesterday, just three days after it received its fifth vessel, the “BYD Xi’an.”

The “BYD Changsha” was officially handed over at a ceremony held in Haimen in East China’s Jiangsu Province. Equipped with 9,200 standard vehicle spaces, the ship runs on dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology designed to reduce emissions.

The “BYD Xi’an,” which was delivered in Yizheng in Jiangsu Province on Sunday, features 16 vehicle decks and a loading capacity of 9,200 vehicles. It is also fitted with state-of-the-art LNG dual-fuel clean propulsion technology.

Previously, BYD had already deployed four vehicle carriers into operation, transporting China’s new energy vehicles (NEVs) to global markets.

BYD’s car carriers are typically named after Chinese cities that host its manufacturing bases, with the exception of its inaugural vessel, the Explorer No. 1.

The deployment of these vessels has significantly enhanced the company’s overseas delivery efficiency, reduced logistics costs and transport cycles, and accelerated BYD’s global expansion strategy, according to the company.

BYD has experienced rapid growth in global NEV sales and is positioning itself as a vertically integrated player in global markets. The company aims to sell 5.5 million vehicles in 2025, including over 800,000 units overseas, according to BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu in a March statement.

In a notable achievement, BYD has officially overtaken Tesla in the prestigious 2025 Future Readiness Indicator, a comprehensive global ranking that measures a company’s ability to anticipate, adapt, and thrive amid external changes. The report was released last month by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), a leading Swiss business school.

The ranking evaluated companies based on a comprehensive range of forward-looking criteria, including innovation, regulatory flexibility, and customer engagement. Among 21 global automakers assessed, BYD emerged at the top.                        (Tang Li)
