STEP into the whimsical world of Cirque du Soleil’s “KOOZA,” which premiered in Montreal, Canada, in 2007 and is now performing in Hong Kong through July 13. Featuring an international cast of 54 artists, this spectacular show combines breathtaking acrobatics, intricate costumes, dazzling lights, and energetic dance with an unforgettable journey filled with laughter, wonder, and storytelling. Follow the protagonist, The Innocent, on his inventive journey of self-discovery. One fateful day, while flying his kite, The Innocent receives a mysterious object that transports him to a bizarre and exotic realm. Under the watchful eye of an enigmatic Trickster with extraordinary abilities, The Innocent navigates this fantastical world, encountering eccentric characters and awe-inspiring spectacles along the way. For the Hong Kong performances, “KOOZA” introduces some new acrobatic acts. In “Silks,” the aerialist flies, spins, and swings in all directions, creating a flowing and dynamic movement that contrasts with the gripping high acrobatics of the silk act. Her breathtaking versatility allows her to command the space, soaring into incredible aerial feats while building excitement toward an outstanding climax. In “Diabolos,” the artist spins, throws, and juggles not one, not two, but three diabolos simultaneously in a high-energy, fast-paced act characterized by impressive rhythm and speed. The “High Wire” act features twin high wires crisscrossing diagonally from stage left to stage right at heights of 4.5 and 7.6 meters above the stage. Four tightrope walkers add tension and drama to the 2,994-kg load carried by each wire. The 725-kg “Wheel of Death” spins at heart-stopping speeds, powered solely by two artists who leap and counter-rotate in a death-defying display of fearless acrobatics and astonishing teamwork. Like “High Wire,” the “Wheel of Death” is positioned diagonally from stage left to stage right to break traditional symmetry and bring the action as close as possible to the audience. In “Balancing on Chairs,” the equipment is delightfully simple: eight chairs and a pedestal. Yet the artist uses this minimal setup to create a 7-meter tower on which to perform a balancing act that showcases the human body at the peak of strength and muscular control.
