‘The Brothers Karamazov’

Set in 19th-century Russia, “The Brothers Karamazov” is a passionate philosophical drama exploring free will, morality, faith, and doubt, centered on the theme of patricide amid a modernizing Russia.

‘The First Date’

Broadway Moscow presents the Russian version of the hit Broadway musical “The First Date.” Originally created by “Gossip Girl” creator Austin Winsberg and Disney composers Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, the musical centers on a blind date between an uptight businessman and a fun-loving, quirky artist.

Time: 8 p.m. Sept. 3-6 (Sept. 6-7 also at 2:30 p.m.)

Venue: Shenzhen Poly Theater, Nanshan District (深圳保利剧院)

‘tick,tick...BOOM!’

“tick, tick...BOOM!” is a semi-autobiographical work by musical theater genius Jonathan Larson, capturing his struggles and uncertainties before turning 30.

The musical features explosive rock music and deeply moving lyrics, portraying a young man’s fierce fight before his dreams break apart. The 2021 Netflix film adaptation starring Andrew Garfield won the Golden Globe, reigniting global popularity for this classic.

Time: 2:30 p.m., 8 p.m., Oct. 2-8 (Oct. 4, 5 and 8 also at 2:30 p.m.); schedule for Oct. 9-12 to be announced

Exhibitions

Shenzhen Art Museum in Longhua 深圳美术馆(新馆)

Don’t miss three recently opened exhibitions at Shenzhen Art Museum in Longhua. “I Owe My Life to Art” (until Sept. 7) features works by master Wu Guanzhong, whose art blends Western and Eastern influences. “Tokyo ADC Exhibition in Shenzhen” (until Oct. 12) presents 70 years of creative design by Tokyo Art Director Club. And “A Mirror of Two Visions” (until Aug. 20) displays the beauty of botanical art through ink, watercolor and prints.

Shenzhen Museum 深圳博物馆

Dazzling ceramic artifacts from the Mediterranean coast, West Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia are on display at Shenzhen Museum’s History and Folk Culture Division until Aug. 31. You will see distinctive pieces featuring unusual shapes and intricate patterns.

Meanwhile, another exhibition, running until Oct. 8 at the museum’s Ancient Art Division, showcases colorful pottery, sculptures, bronzeware, ceramics, and glassware from Puglia, Italy.

MOCAUP 深圳市当代艺术与城市规划馆

Oscar-winning artist Tim Yip has created “Mirror Garden,” a captivating exhibition at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning (MOCAUP) running until Sept. 7. Visitors can experience Yip’s visually stunning installations, videos, sketches, photographs, and garments, all expressing his distinctive “New Orientalism” aesthetic.
