Tech increases accessibility for athletes with disabilities
    2025-07-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SEVERAL cutting-edge tech devices have appeared during the ongoing cycling events of the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games in Longgang District, Shenzhen.

For many athletes and spectators who rely on wheelchairs for mobility, steps and ditches can be insurmountable barriers. However, a smart stair-climbing electric wheelchair unveiled during the cycling events has become a game changer.

After trying the life-changing device, an athlete excitedly stated, “Climbing up and down stairs has always been a huge problem, and this wheelchair has truly solved our biggest concern!”

According to Guangdong Kaiyang Medical Technology, the Foshan-based company that developed the wheelchair, it can climb 1,120 steps on a full charge, sense the gradient of stairs and automatically adjust the seating position to ensure safety and comfort, and cross ditches up to 28 centimeters wide.

Also making an appearance is a wheelchair that allows users to control it through a specially designed “brain ring.” It works by capturing brainwaves and processing them with an advanced AI system, thereby translating them into precise commands such as moving forward and backward, turning, and braking.

This innovative wheelchair also features a full-body lifting function, allowing users to switch between sitting and reclining positions and smoothly transfer between a bed and the wheelchair.

The Longgang International Cycling Velodrome, where the cycling events are taking place, is also benefiting from advanced technology. Intelligent humanoid and quadruped robots are on patrol along preset routes both inside and outside the venue, equipped with capabilities like voice reminders, video promotion, and alarm functions.

The hotels where athletes are staying are also providing access to locally developed cutting-edge technology. The SoundBook – Government Accessibility System, which features voice recognition and sign language translation, has created a communication bridge for the hearing-impaired community. Guide Rabbit AI Glasses are transforming visual images into voice descriptions, helping visually impaired athletes better perceive their surroundings.

According to the event’s organizing committee, a total of 108 high-quality tech products from 38 companies have been deployed to meet the personalized needs of athletes, including smart wheelchairs, prostheses, rehabilitation robots, security robots, and unmanned rescue boats.
