THE Sea World Culture and Arts Center (SWCAS) in Shekou, Nanshan District, is currently showcasing a dynamic lineup of contemporary art exhibitions, offering visitors an immersive experience into global and local artistic visions. ‘Frida’s Paradox’ More widely known simply as Frida, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. She is a legendary figure in the global art world and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The exhibition features original oil paintings, watercolors, manuscripts, and personal items, with a total of 250 pieces making their debut in China. It highlights Frida’s childhood and formative years, showcases a collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts that deeply inspired her, and presents Mexican folk art that shaped her creative spirit. Visitors will also see the traditional native clothing and jewelry Frida actually wore, as well as her powerful late still-life paintings and manuscripts that embody her artistic mastery. Dates: Until Sept. 15 ‘Defining Today’s Art’ The “35 Artists at the Edge of Global Contemporary: Defining Today’s Art” exhibition features 35 visionary artists who have already established influential voices on the international stage. Far from emerging talents, these creators are shaping the language of contemporary art in 2025. Visitors will gain insight into the complexity and courage driving today’s global art scene through this compelling assembly. Dates: Until Oct. 8 ‘One-Person Art Fair’ Artist Fang Peixin’s innovative show expands on his previous exhibition “My Spiritual Nourishment” by introducing the concept of an “art fair” within an exhibition. By inventing a fictional art fair space, Fang enlarges and complicates the exhibition venue, enriching the content and creating a more holistic artistic universe. Dates: Until Sept. 16 ‘Body Beyond the Rules’ The Zheng Guogu/Yang Jiang Group — comprising prominent contemporary Chinese artists Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan, and Sun Qinglin — presents their first solo museum exhibition in China, “Body Beyond the Rules: Contemporary Exploration of Society and the Body,” in a decade. The group examines intersections of social structures and bodily crises through their art, aiming to deconstruct and reactivate perceptions of the body through a fusion of textual and energetic approaches. Dates: From July 28 to Oct. 26 Venue: Sea World Culture and Arts Center, Shekou, Nanshan District (海上世界文化艺术中心) Metro: Line 2 or 12 to Sea World Station (海上世界站), Exit A(Li Jing) |
