Vienna Boys’ Choir to perform Strauss classics
    2025-07-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CONDUCTED by Niccolò Morello, the Schubert ensemble of the Vienna Boys’ Choir will return to Shenzhen Concert Hall this September, performing the beloved numbers by the Johann Strauss father and son.

Known as Austria’s “national treasures” alongside the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is among the world’s most renowned and outstanding children’s choirs. The ensemble dates back to 1498, during the reign of the Habsburg Dynasty in Austria, with its predecessor serving as the imperial court chapel choir.

By the Renaissance period, the ensemble gradually expanded its musical activities and its repertoire. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the choir established close ties with such renowned composers as Haydn and Mozart. Notably, Mozart himself was once a member of the choir and received his early musical education there. Schubert and Bruckner had written music for the choir.

By the mid-20th century, the boys began to tour globally and collaborate with celebrated conductors, including Karajan, Bernstein, Abbado, and Zubin Mehta. Since its first triumphant U.S. tour in 1956, the choir has maintained a tradition of regular world tours.

Now recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s cultural heritage, the choir captivates audiences worldwide with its unique timbre, exceptional artistry, and expressive power.

Morello, the newly appointed master of the Schubert ensemble, has collaborated with top orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducting Purcell’s classic opera “Dido and Aeneas” and the premiere of contemporary composer Fabio Cuco’s works.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss Junior’s birth, the program will be exclusively from the Strauss family, including “The Blue Danube,” “Singer’s Joy,” fast polka “For Ever!” and “Chit-chat Polka.”

Time: 8 p.m., Sept. 20

Venue: Shenzhen Concert Hall, Futian District (深圳音乐厅)

Metro: Line 3 or 4 to Children’s Palace Station (少年宫站), Exit E
