Dixi opera carnival kicks off in Guizhou
    2025-08-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A CARNIVAL featuring Anshun Dixi opera performances began Saturday at Miaoling Tunpu, a tourist destination in Anshun, Guizhou Province, aiming to inspire public enthusiasm for this treasured local cultural heritage.

Hailed as the “living fossil of Chinese theatrical culture,” Anshun Dixi opera originated during the reign of Ming Dynasty’s first emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, in the late 14th century. Zhu sent 300,000 soldiers from the north to quell rebellions in the south, and after the war, some troops and their families settled in Guizhou. These military settlements became known as Tunpu.

Over time, Tunpu residents blended historical tales with military drills into Dixi opera, a unique theatrical art form celebrating their loyalty and bravery. In 2006, it was listed among China’s first national intangible cultural heritage items. Today, local troupes perform across China and abroad, including in France and Romania.

The opening ceremony showcased not only traditional Dixi opera but also local rappers performing dialect-infused songs inspired by the ancient art.

The event features 10 performance zones, where 100 Dixi troupes will compete. A grand parade will see costumed performers march through the scenic area to the beat of war drums and battle songs, recreating the spectacle of soldiers heading to war. Meanwhile, social media influencers will join a Dixi-inspired fashion show.

Visitors can also enjoy costume experiences, Tunpu delicacies, and an exhibition that displays Dixi opera masks, librettos, and other items detailing the evolution of this art form.
