SZ’s libraries packed with learners
    2025-08-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN has been experiencing a mix of relentless heat and frequent rainfall this summer. In such unpleasant weather, many citizens abandon outdoor activities and head to a cool learner’s haven — libraries. Luckily, Shenzhen has many public libraries and study rooms in all districts.

The library has always been my favorite spot during vacations. This summer, however, I was surprised to find that the one near where I live became so packed that sometimes it’s hard to get a seat.

Bao’an Library spans four levels — three above ground and one underground — with more than 2,000 seats. Visitors stream into the library as early as 9 a.m., most of them high school students on their summer break. These young people sit quietly at desks, reading or working on their studies.

During lunch breaks, instead of leaving, many choose to stay at their seats, resting their heads on their arms for a quick nap before returning to their books with renewed focus. Therefore, if you come in the afternoon, it can be difficult to find a seat.

Bao’an Library is not alone. In fact, other public libraries in Shenzhen are equally crowded, with study areas filled with people from early morning until closing time.

Libraries provide an ideal place for students to concentrate on their studies — quiet and away from the distractions of digital devices. Chen, a middle school student, told me: “It helps me stay focused when everyone around me is studying.”

Chinese high school students are also under pressure to excel in their studies and get into prestigious colleges. “My mom expects me to make good use of the summer break. Sometimes she herself comes to the library with me to make sure I work hard,” another student told me.

The attraction of libraries continues to grow also because they have evolved with the times, offering diverse services and experiences to cater to the changing needs of the public.

For example, apart from study areas, Bao’an Library also offers a technology experience area popular with teenagers. In this area, they can experience 3D printing and play Go with a robot. Each weekend, the library holds lectures where school principals and educators share their insights on learning, or other professionals talk about their specific research.

An engaging platform for young learners to study and experience new things in this vibrant city, libraries in Shenzhen are a great place to spend the hot summer.
