‘Amazing Shenzhen’ trams launched in key European cities

SHENZHEN’S “Amazing Shenzhen” global tourism campaign has launched in Europe, with brightly decorated trams appearing on the streets of several major cities.

The campaign has generated online buzz with sightings reported in key European hubs, including Rome, Milan, Florence, Berlin, Porto, and Barcelona. The trams, which feature striking images of Shenzhen, are part of a broader municipal initiative to attract international visitors.

These vehicles serve as mobile showcases of the city’s diverse culture and landmarks. A closer look at the designs reveals a rich tapestry of imagery. Alongside striking photos of modern architecture — including Shenzhen Bay Park, the towering Ping An Finance Center, and the “Bay Glory” Ferris wheel — the trams also feature vibrant depictions of the city’s celebrated cuisine, powerful visuals from the acclaimed dance drama “Wing Chun,” and glimpses of the city’s stunning natural landscapes. This blend of architectural marvels, cultural arts, celebrated food, and natural beauty is designed to offer a comprehensive glimpse into Shenzhen’s dynamic identity.

The campaign has prompted a positive reaction online, particularly from overseas Chinese. Many have shared photos of the trams, expressing enthusiasm and a sense of hometown pride.

“Family! I just saw Shenzhen on the road, I got a picture, I’m not mistaken, am I?” one netizen posted online.

Another shared the sentiment, writing, “+1! I saw it last week too, isn’t that my hometown!”

Others were impressed with the campaign’s quality, commenting, “Wow, this wave gets a full 100 points.”

The choice of Italy as a major focus for the campaign was strategic, building on a growing partnership. Shenzhen and Milan formally became friendship cities in 2018, and the two have since deepened their ties in fashion, design, and culture. Shenzhen designers have become a regular presence at Milan Fashion Week, and a direct Shenzhen-Milan flight route now streamlines travel between the two hubs.

This promotional effort is accompanied by a significant increase in international visitors. According to the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, as of Aug. 11, the total number of foreign travelers inspected at the airport checkpoint had increased by more than 48.1% this year.

This momentum is supported by policies and infrastructure upgrades designed to make travel seamless. From the streets of Europe to major hubs in Asia, Shenzhen is successfully raising its profile on the world stage. The “Amazing Shenzhen” campaign serves as an open invitation to the world to experience the energy, innovation, and charm of a city that is living up to its name.
