IN a major leap for the display industry, Shenzhen-based TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co. Ltd. has begun construction of the world’s first mass-production facility for large-format printed OLED screens.

The milestone project, launched Tuesday in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, positions the company, a subsidiary of TCL Technology, at the forefront of next-generation display technology.

The new factory, designated “t8,” will specialize in producing 8.6-generation printed OLED panels primarily for high-end tablets, laptops, and computer monitors.

With construction expected to take 24 months and total investment projected to reach approximately US$4 billion, the facility represents a significant commitment to advancing display manufacturing capabilities.

“This production line represents a breakthrough for the global display industry,” said Zhao Jun, senior vice president of TCL Technology. “By integrating the entire supply chain — from basic materials to finished products — we’re creating a complete industrial ecosystem designed to compete internationally.”

The technology at the heart of this project – Inkjet Printing OLED – represents a revolutionary approach to screen manufacturing.

Unlike conventional methods, it uses precision printing techniques to deposit light-emitting materials onto display panels, similar to how an inkjet printer applies ink to paper. This process enables superior color performance, higher resolution, and greater energy efficiency while potentially reducing production costs.

The global display market is undergoing a rapid transformation, fueled by growing demand for foldable screens, advanced automotive displays, wearable devices, and larger format screens. OLED technology has emerged as the preferred choice in premium segments due to its superior image quality and versatility.

According to Omdia, a leading technology research firm, active-matrix OLED panel shipments are expected to grow from 1.01 billion units in 2024 to over 1.33 billion units by 2030, with strong growth in computing and automotive applications.

The t8 project will enable TCL to better capitalize on these expanding markets and strengthen its position in premium display segments.
