TO mark the 130th anniversary of world cinema and the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema, the Nationwide Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas will screen 14 classic Chinese and international films at Broadway Cinematheque in Shenzhen from Oct. 30 to Nov. 16. From François Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows,” a landmark of the French New Wave, to Akira Kurosawa’s epic “Ran” and the tear‑jerking tragicomedy “Memories of Matsuko,” the program spans from the 1950s to recent years and features films from China, France, Japan, Germany and Iran — including six 4K‑restored versions. All films will be shown in their original languages; some have both English and Chinese subtitles, while others have Chinese subtitles only. Films with English and Chinese subtitles ‘The 400 Blows’ (1959) (4K) Truffaut’s semi‑autobiographical tale follows 12‑year‑old Antoine Doinel as he struggles with indifferent parents and drifts toward petty crime, only to be pushed further by the adults around him. ‘Memories of Matsuko’ (2006) A visually dazzling Japanese film that traces the tragic, often bizarre life of Matsuko, a woman whose tortured past and unpredictable choices leave a powerful emotional imprint. ‘Three Colors: White’ (1994) (4K) In the second film of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy, Polish immigrant Karol is abandoned by his French wife and loses his livelihood; the story follows his desperate attempts to rebuild his life. ‘My Memories of Old Beijing’ (1983) Set in the late 1920s, this Chinese film follows Yingzi as she explores Beijing and learns about the complexities of adult life through her encounters with its inhabitants. ‘Throw Down’ (2004) (4K) Directed by Johnnie To, the movie centers on a former judo champion (Louis Koo) who finds a chance at redemption through an unexpected friendship with a rival (Aaron Kwok) and an aspiring singer. ‘Center Stage’ (1991) (4K) This biographical film about Ruan Lingyu chronicles the actress’ meteoric rise and tragic fate in 1930s Shanghai, with a notable performance by Maggie Cheung. ‘Sorrows and Joys of a Middle‑aged Man’ (1949) (4K) This Chinese drama focuses on a widower who develops feelings for a much younger colleague, exploring generational tensions and social expectations. Films with Chinese subtitles only ‘Ran’ (1985) (4K) Kurosawa’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s “King Lear” is a sweeping historical epic. Set in 16th‑century Japan, an aging warlord divides his realm among three sons with devastating consequences. ‘Cléo From 5 to 7’ (1962) Agnès Varda’s real‑time portrait of a young singer wandering in Paris as she awaits medical test results blends vérité observation with melodramatic intensity. ‘Still Walking’ (2008) This intimate family drama directed by Hirokazu Kore‑eda is about a commemorative gathering in which simmering tensions and quiet memories gradually surface. ‘Run Lola Run’ (1998) In this kinetic German thriller, Lola has 20 minutes to raise a large sum of money to help her boyfriend Manni — a film of repeated scenarios that explores chance and consequence. ‘The Spirit of the Beehive’ (1973) Set in a small Spanish village in 1940, this film follows a 7‑year‑old girl who, traumatized by a screening of “Frankenstein,” retreats into a private world of imagination. ‘Close‑Up’ (1990) Abbas Kiarostami’s hybrid of fiction and documentary is based on a true case in which a man was arrested for impersonating the filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The film blurs fact and reconstruction to probe identity and truth. ‘RBG’ (2018) This U.S. documentary chronicles the extraordinary life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her unexpected rise as a pop culture icon.
