For decades, contemporary artists have experimented with tradition, striving to break free from the confines of “utensils” and “crafts” to redefine the medium. Until Dec. 12, a groundbreaking exhibition featuring the works of 10 ceramic masters invites audiences to witness a tradition reborn as contemporary art at the Guangming Culture and Arts Center. Co-organized by Art News of China, the Jingdezhen Ceramic Research Institute, and the Guangming center, “Reshaping: Contemporary Ceramic Painting Research Exhibition” showcases the works of 10 renowned ceramic masters. Among them, He Linong and Han Zifeng from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute draw deeply from the long tradition of Chinese painting and the meticulous craftsmanship of folk art. Zhu Di, Chen Jun, and Zheng Yuke from Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts and Design and the Central Academy of Fine Arts blend rigorous artistic training with avant-garde contemporary concepts. Meanwhile, independent artists such as Zhang Guojun and Fan Hongbin boldly expand the boundaries of ceramic art, displaying distinctive personal styles in their works. “Art creation is the externalization of the artist’s inner world. Existing alongside the physical world and other systems such as science and religion that interpret it, art possesses its own unique value,” Zhang noted, adding that art’s significance lies in constructing an independent spiritual world. “It is the artist’s role to break free from conceptual constraints and create unique interpretations of the world, whether their medium is canvas, digital media, or ceramics,” he said. At the exhibition, visitors will encounter ceramic paintings reminiscent of traditional Chinese landscapes and bird-and-flower works, as well as pieces inspired by Western Impressionism and Japanese ukiyo-e, and even collages incorporating various materials. According to Peng Ying, deputy head of the Guangming District government, the exhibition aims to foster a dialogue between contemporary and traditional approaches, and between technology and art. She noted that technological advancements, along with evolving ideas and trends, can open up new possibilities for artistic expression. Art enthusiasts are invited to experience the latest innovations in ceramics at this visually striking and intellectually stimulating exhibition. Admission is free.
