Hit acrobatic drama to grace local stage
    2026-01-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

PREPARE to be captivated! “The Butterfly Lovers,” a show hailed by audiences as “the most beautiful acrobatic drama” and “the most thrilling dance theater,” will soon grace the stage at the Antuoshan Public Cultural Center.

Produced by the Guangzhou Acrobatic Art Theater and premiering in 2021, this contemporary acrobatic dance drama is an ambitious reimagining of the classic Chinese folk legend, “The Butterfly Lovers.” The narrative of the ill-fated lovers and their ultimate metamorphosis is brought to life not through words, but through a stunning display of 32 highly demanding acrobatic feats.

Audiences will witness groundbreaking acts like “ballet on the shoulder,” “dual umbrella-juggling with feet,” and other dazzling performances. These elements are seamlessly integrated with dramatic storytelling, expressive dance, elements of magic, and cutting-edge multimedia technology to portray a poignant journey of love, sacrifice, and rebirth.

“The Butterfly Lovers” transcends traditional acrobatics. Here, acrobatics is no longer mere spectacle for thrill’s sake; it becomes an expressive, internationally resonant language of art, where sheer physical daring is married to profound aesthetic and emotional depth.

The production has won many prestigious accolades, including the 17th Wenhua Performance Award and the Outstanding Production Award at the 11th National Acrobatic Showcase.

Note: Admission is not permitted for children under 1.1 meters tall or 5 years of age.
