Traditional ice-fishing spectacle reels in tourists
    2026-01-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Crowds of tourists watch winter fishing on the frozen surface of Chagan Lake in Songyuan City, northeast China’s Jilin Province, on Thursday. The occasion also marked the opening of the 24th Jilin Chagan Lake Ice Fishing and Hunting Tourism Festival. Visitors were drawn to time-honored fishing methods carried out on the ice — from manually drilling holes and operating horse-drawn winches to skillfully guiding nets beneath the frozen surface. With origins tracing back to the Liao Dynasty (907–1125), Chagan Lake’s ice fishing tradition has been preserved for over a millennium by generations of local fishermen and women. Recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage, this enduring practice continues to attract large numbers of visitors each winter.Xinhua
