DING LIREN, China’s first-ever world chess champion, visited Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU) on Sept. 29, 2025, engaging with students over a shared celebration of intellectual chess. The visit came just one day after the conclusion of the chess events at China’s 15th National Games. Ding, who made history in April 2023 by defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi to become the 17th undisputed men’s world champion, was greeted with enthusiastic applause by students and faculty. His arrival at SMBU, a university jointly established by Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Beijing Institute of Technology, highlighted the institution’s deep ties to the game. SMBU has established chess as a key part of its identity, assembling a top-tier coaching team that includes Chinese grandmasters like Ye Jiangchuan, Liu Shilan, and Zhao Xue. The university has achieved notable success in national competitions, including a second-place finish in the overall team standings at the 2023 China University Chess Championship. Li Hezhang, president of Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, welcomed Ding, describing the champion as an iconic figure in Chinese mind sports. Li said that Ding’s visit not only affirmed the university’s achievements in campus culture, but also provided a precious opportunity for teachers and students to connect through chess and discuss personal growth. He outlined the university’s comprehensive approach to chess education, which includes inviting renowned masters as guest professors, offering general education courses, and partnering with the Chinese Chess Association to train coaches. SMBU also actively builds competitive platforms, hosting tournaments like the “SMBU Cup,” the Greater Bay Area University Chess Invitational, and China-Russia university matches. A pioneering online “Friendship Cup” tri-university competition with its founding partners has further promoted cross-border exchange. The day began with a gripping simultaneous showcase, where Ding faced off against 21 students in a “blitz” session. Each participant later received a commemorative certificate from the world champion. Ding also presented 11 students with their official “Primary Chess Instructor” certifications. In a closing address, Ding shared his profound understanding and passion for the game. He praised SMBU’s vibrant chess culture and impressive accomplishments, encouraging students to continue exploring the 64 squares. “Enjoy the pleasure of thinking and bravely face challenges,” he told the aspiring players, urging them to find joy in the intellectual battle. |
