UNDER the baton of famed composer-conductor Tan Dun, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will present a concert that bridges French Impressionism and Chinese opera. The program will feature works by Tan alongside masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel, performed by a roster of distinguished soloists including suona player Liu Wenwen, violinist Tang Sushan, Chinese opera singer Zhang Jun, and pianist Fang Zixiang. The first half will open with Claude Debussy’s “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune,” a work suffused with dreamlike atmosphere. Following this, Tan Dun’s double concerto “Farewell My Concubine” will be performed, blending the expressive soul of Peking Opera with the architecture of classical music. Zhang Jun will take on the role of Consort Yu, accompanied by pianist Fang Zixiang. The second half continues this artistic dialogue across cultures. Violinist Tang Sushan will perform Tan Dun’s dynamic “Rock the Violin in Rhapsody.” Subsequently, suona virtuoso Liu Wenwen will present a new arrangement of the Huangmei Opera classic “The Heavenly Maid and the Mortal,” adapted for suona and orchestra by composer Zhang Meng. Liu’s performance, imitating vocal inflections and natural sounds through the suona’s vibrant timbre, promises to refresh this beloved folk melody. The concert will culminate with the second suite from Maurice Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloé,” whose dazzling orchestration and emotional intensity will provide a brilliant and satisfying conclusion to the evening.
