Shenzhen stands out as the only megacity in China where over 80% of commutes are completed within 45 minutes, according to a report from the China Academy of Urban Planning & Design under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. In 2024, 81% of Shenzhen journeys met this 45‑minute benchmark — a common measure of urban efficiency and residents’ quality of life. The study also highlights “happy commutes,” defined as trips under 5 kilometers.
