National Museum of China porcelains on display in SZ
    2026-03-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

“CONVERGENCE of Elegance — A Special Exhibition on Ancient Chinese Porcelain Art” at Nanshan Museum presents 133 pieces and sets on loan from the National Museum of China. The exhibition traces a visual journey from serene simplicity to a chorus of color and technique.

Visitors can admire celadon glazes that evoke misty southern rains and white porcelains that recall northern snows. Underglaze blues and reds weave together like a rainbow piercing the sun, while overglaze enamels — including doucai, wucai and famille rose — burst into a vivid spring of color.

From the minimalist grace of monochrome glazes to the kiln’s dramatic alchemy, fiery unpredictability yields breathtaking effects: Iron-brown glazes crystallize into partridge‑feather patterns, cobalt blue settles like a clear sky, and copper red blooms like crab‑apple blossoms.

Here, the fervor of fire and the softness of clay meet under masterful hands, celebrating a centuries‑long pursuit of perfection. The exhibition is a dreamscape of glaze and form where chance and craft fuse into art.

The show is organized into three sections — “Human World: Celadon and White,” “Kiln Transformations: Fiery Hues,” and “Pure Condensation: Polychromy.” It traces the early quest for a jade‑like quality and later efforts to imitate a range of materials; moves from the restrained purity of single‑color glazes to the lavish brilliance of polychrome wares; and ranges from practical vessels to display objects and spiritual treasures. More than a collection of artifacts, the exhibition offers a systematic overview and a warm tribute to the aesthetics of Chinese porcelain.

Dates: Through May 5

Venue: Nanshan Museum, Nanshan District (南山博物馆)

Metro: Line 12 to Nantou Ancient City Station (南头古城站), Exit E4(Cao Zhen)
