Fifth Stop: Auckland, New Zealand In 1999, the 7th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held in Auckland, New Zealand. The meeting set goals for developed economies to achieve paperless trade by 2005 and developing economies by 2010, and also approved the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) scheme. Auckland is New Zealand’s economic, cultural, shipping, and tourism hub, often referred to as the “City of Sails.” With a thriving economy, pleasant environment, and high quality of life, it has consistently ranked among the world’s most livable cities for years. It is the only major metropolis built atop a field of dormant volcanoes, where lush, green volcanic cones define the skyline. In recent years, a steady wave of global migration has transformed the city into a vibrant multicultural tapestry. |
