‘Hello APEC’ market brings East Asian traditions to life in Shekou
    2026-04-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE second installment of the “Hello APEC” Shekou cultural market series was held Sunday, taking local and expatriate participants on an immersive journey through East Asia.

Organized by the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats (Shekou MSCE), the series aims to foster a vibrant international atmosphere in anticipation of the 2026 APEC summit, which will take place in Shenzhen in November.

Centered around Korean and Japanese cultures, the bazaar,  supported by the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Shenzhen, offered a blend of authentic cuisine, live performances, interactive experiences, and educational outreach, providing a one-stop cultural immersion without leaving Shenzhen.

The food section proved the most popular attraction, featuring a rich array of authentic flavor. These traditional delicacies allowed visitors to embark on a culinary journey to the two East Asian countries.

The stage remained a focal point of excitement. Energetic K-pop dance routines energized the crowd, while violin performances added a romantic touch. Students and teachers from the Korean International School in Shenzhen delivered a powerful taekwondo demonstration.

Immersive interactive zones enabled residents to dive deep into local customs. Supported by Bornga Korean Restaurant, the Hanbok trial area drew long lines of residents eager to dress in traditional garments for photos.

Meanwhile, a Japanese matcha tea ceremony offered a serene taste of Eastern lifestyle. Junko, a long-time Japanese resident of Shenzhen who hosted a stall, shared her joy in showcasing matcha culture, noting the warmth and curiosity displayed by the diverse crowd.

The bazaar also featured beloved cartoon icons such as Hello Kitty, Doraemon, and Pikachu.

A major highlight was the surprise appearance of the trending IP “Puppygoon,” whose South Korean designer attended the event to share creative stories and interact with fans.

The event included an APEC Knowledge Station, where residents learned about the organization’s mission and the significance of the 2026 meeting through quizzes and creative souvenirs. Language workshops in Korean and Japanese also attracted many enthusiasts, who practiced basic phrases in exchange for themed gifts. A “Circular Market” was established to promote eco-friendly living through bartering.
