Ballet dance ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ to stage in SZ
    2026-05-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FOR the first time, the tragic tale of the Phantom will be told entirely through the art of ballet. The Shanghai Ballet is bringing its original production of “The Phantom of the Opera” to the Shenzhen Grand Theater this June, marking the show’s grand debut in the Greater Bay Area.

As the world’s first complete “Phantom” told entirely through dance, this production offers a familiar story reborn “en pointe.” It has been transformed through a distinctly Chinese interpretation and elevated to an international standard of storytelling through movement.

The narrative pulls back the sumptuous curtains of the Paris Opera House to reveal the complicated, shadowed relationship between the gifted young ballerina Christine and the mysterious Phantom who haunts the theater. A genius hidden in the opera’s underworld, the Phantom mentors and manipulates Christine with obsessive intensity. As jealousy, rumor, and revenge swirl around them, his desire grows ever fiercer. In the end, when love triumphs over possessiveness, the Phantom lets his beloved go and disappears into lonely despair.

The creative team is top-tier: choreography by British director Derek Deane (known for his grand-scale productions of “Swan Lake”) and an original score by acclaimed composer Carl Davis (composer for BBC productions). The stage and costume design come from the artist behind the celebrated male “Swan Lake,” while lighting and multimedia effects reach a cinematic level — every scene is picture-perfect.

One of the show’s signature moments is the ballet interpretation of the famous “underground kiss.” When the rose falls and the Phantom kneels alone in the pool of light, the haunting beauty of solitude and sacrifice lingers long after the curtain falls.

Time: 8 p.m., June 12-13

Venue: Shenzhen Grand Theater, Luohu District (深圳大剧院)
