Western classics meet Eastern fantasy at piano concert
    2026-05-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

GEORGE HARLIONO, the British-born mixed-heritage pianist and silver medalist at the 17th International Tchaikovsky Competition, is set to make his debut at the Guangming Culture and Art Center in August.

With English elegance and the romantic charm of Bali in his blood, Harliono began playing piano at 5 and gave his first solo recital at 9. He has since performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.

At 15, he received a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying under renowned Russian and French piano masters.

In 2023, he claimed the silver medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition, with Russian piano legend Denis Matsuev praising him as “extremely talented” with a brilliant future ahead.

Harliono has collaborated with conductors such as Valery Gergiev and orchestras including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

His 2026 world tour features nearly 50 performances across major concert halls and festivals. Now, he brings his “Oriental Fantasy”-themed recital to Shenzhen, weaving Eastern rhythms into a program of classical masterpieces.

The repertoire includes Bach’s “Chaconne (arr. Busoni),” Liszt’s “Un Sospiro,” “Liebesträume No. 3,” and “Mephisto Waltz No. 1,” Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” Chopin’s “Nocturne in C Minor,” and Balakirev’s “Islamey” — an “Oriental Fantasy” that crowns the evening with dazzling virtuosity.

This performance promises a musical journey where East meets West, brought to life by one of today’s most exciting young concert pianists.

Time: 8 p.m., Aug. 8

Venue: Concert Hall, Guangming Culture and Art Center, Guangming District (光明文化艺术中心演艺中心●音乐厅)

Metro: Line 6 to Fenghuang Town Station (凤凰城站), Exit B
