A spectator’s guide to Hong Kong dragon boat races
    2026-05-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THIS year, Hong Kong’s most iconic summer celebration returns bigger and louder than ever. The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races — a tradition that began in 1976 — will mark its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee). Once again, the skyline of Victoria Harbour serves as the dramatic backdrop as teams battle for glory.

The 2026 invitation race will feature more than 220 elite squads from 16 countries and regions, paddling with explosive power to the rhythm of pounding drums beneath the glittering skyline.

Event details

Racing days & time: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., June 27–28

Location: Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade — from the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront to the Bruce Lee statue along the Avenue of Stars

Transport: MTR to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station, Exit J2 or P1 (5–8 min walk)

Spectators can enjoy free viewing areas and covered stands. The best vantage points run along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, where you can feel the spray and thunder of dragon boats racing just meters away.

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival (June 19 – July 1)

More than just races, the 13‑day carnival turns the harborfront into an all‑day waterfront party. Highlights include:

Intangible cultural heritage workshops: Try your hand at traditional dragon boat craftsmanship.

VR dragon boat experience: Feel the rush of racing with virtual reality.

Live music: Non‑stop performances on the harbor stage

Dragon boat food street: Seasonal festive treats and local snacks

Beer promenade: Enjoy drinks with a view of Victoria Harbour; visitors get free icy rice dumplings and beer.

Costume parade: Teams compete in hilarious creative outfits, from mythical gods to cartoon favorites.

Tips for spectators

● Sun protection: June in Hong Kong is hot. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.

● Arrive early: Aim for at least 30 minutes before the first race to secure a good viewing spot.

● Photo stops: Don’t miss the 22‑meter giant dragon boat display and themed photo installations.

● Free treats: During the carnival, be sure to claim your complimentary rice dumplings and beer for a true local summer flavor.
