
17th Stop: Singapore Singapore hosted the 17th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on Nov. 14–15, 2009, themed “Sustaining Growth, Connecting the Region.” Held at the Istana, the two-stage summit addressed the global financial crisis, climate change, and regional integration. Leaders adopted a declaration to maintain economic stimulus, accelerate Doha Round negotiations, and prioritize food security and health. Known as the “Lion City,” Singapore is a Southeast Asian island nation and a premier global shipping and aviation hub. Located at the Strait of Malacca’s entrance, it comprises Singapore Island and 63 islets. A former British colony and Japanese-occupied territory, Singapore gained self-governance in 1959 and became an independent republic on Aug. 9, 1965, after separating from Malaysia. |
