THE Shenzhen Concert Hall will be filled with the pure voices of children in late August as the “Multiethnic Children’s Choir in Concert” returns for its eighth edition. The performance brings together ethnic heritage inheritors from the grasslands of Gansu, the villages of Guangxi, and the ancient Naxi settlements of Yunnan, alongside professional children’s choirs, for a night of classic and beloved repertoire that promises to offer a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

The performance features a lineup of award-winning children’s choirs, including the Shenzhen Concert Hall Golden Treelet Multi-Ethnic Children’s Choir, winner of two gold awards at the 13th World Choir Games; the Shenzhen Over the Rainbow Children’s Choir, which claimed a gold medal in the A2 category at the 9th Singapore International Choral Festival; the Guangxi Mass Culture and Art Center Little Osmanthus Children’s Choir; and the Chanson de Montagne Kazakh Children’s Choir from Aksai County, Gansu.

The concert program weaves together a rich tapestry of musical traditions, ranging from the classic folk song “Jasmine Flower” to the original Zhuang-language choral piece “Colorful Waters in the Zhuang Homeland — Blessing Song,” Naxi work songs, and uplifting international folk ballads. The evening will also feature a Kazakh dombra instrumental ensemble, adaptations of Wang Luobin’s beloved classics, and a traditional Hungarian folk song. The concert will draw to a close with grand ensemble performances of “Over the Rainbow” and “Unwilling to Part,” delivering a heartfelt celebration of China’s ethnic diversity.

The concert is helmed by veteran artistic director and chief conductor Hu Manxue, who has held the post for eight consecutive years and has devoted over three decades to choral music. She is joined by conductor Ye Shijia, a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at the University of Southern California, and pianists Peng Yunlin and Yu Bei, both highly trained professionals serving as piano accompanists.
