SMBU Rector Li Hezhang delivered an inspiring speech during the commencement ceremony for the Class of 2026, held on campus on June 24.

He remarked that today’s graduates face diverse choices in life and career. “You may pursue academic research and try to uncover truth in the sciences and humanities; you may apply your talent in industry or technology development; or you may take a gap year, slow down, and recalibrate your direction for a more clear-headed and committed future.”

Li noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping knowledge production and career landscapes. Algorithms and online traffic bring both opportunities and hidden traps.

He offered three earnest hopes for the graduates: “First, be grounded and have confidence.” He cited the story of Li Yuyao, a student from the Faculty of Economics, to illustrate that true confidence stems from the continuous elevation of one’s capabilities. He encouraged the graduates to take pride in their unique experience at a Sino-Russian cooperative university, which fostered their trilingual ability, cross-cultural perspective, and solid academic training.

“Second, adapt to changes and seize opportunities while upholding certain principles.” He recounted the story of Academician Hu Haiyan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of Beijing Institute of Technology. In 1977, Hu seized the opportunity to sit the first National College Entrance Exams after a hiatus of more than a decade, and became a math student at Shandong University. Driven by newfound passion, he chose to switch to mechanics in his junior year, and integrated his personal choices into the development of the nation’s science and technology.

“Third, break new ground through hands-on experience.” Li cited Shenzhen’s remarkable journey of transforming from a small border town into a global metropolis in just over four decades to prove that life rewards those who are daring and resilient.

Li bid the graduates a warm farewell with his best wishes: “As you go forth from here, remember our deal — stay physically healthy, stay positive in mind, master Chinese, Russian, and English, and hone your professional skills. May you overcome obstacles and prevail every step of the way.”
