Agatha Christie’s classic to hit Shenzhen stage
    2026-08-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SUSPENSE drama enthusiasts in Shenzhen are in for an unforgettable experience as a Chinese stage adaptation of “And Then There Were None” comes to the city for two performances on Aug. 21 and 22.

First published in 1939, Agatha Christie’s seminal crime novel has been translated into more than 50 languages and has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. It follows 10 strangers summoned to an isolated island, each harboring dark secrets. The generous hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Owen, have mysteriously vanished, and each person present is accused of a terrible crime. When one of the guests suddenly dies, they realize they might be in the company of a murderer. The series of deaths leads them to suspect each other as they try to uncover the killer’s identity.

Known globally as the “Queen of Crime,” Christie’s illustrious body of work includes timeless classics such as “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile.” Among her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, “And Then There Were None” stands as her best-known and bestselling work, widely regarded as her crowning achievement. More than eight decades after its publication, the novel remains as gripping as ever and has inspired numerous stage, film, and television adaptations.

The Chinese-language stage version first premiered in Shanghai in 2007 to critical and popular acclaim, igniting a nationwide “suspense drama craze” that continues to this day.

This production promises an immersive theatrical experience like no other. Set within a meticulously recreated 1930s Art Deco villa — complete with a spiral staircase, deep spatial layers, and winding corridors — the design evokes a dark vortex that draws audiences into the heart of the mystery. Howling winds, torrential rain, lightning flashes, and flickering candlelight interplay with shadows and shifting light to create an overwhelming atmosphere of dread. The tension is palpable, seeping through every seat and leaving audiences with a haunting sense of being trapped alongside the characters, with no escape in sight.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Aug. 21 & 22

Venue: Opera Hall, Longgang International Arts Center, Longgang District (龙岗国际艺术中心歌剧厅)

Metro: Line 10 to Bei’er Road Station (贝尔路站), Exit D(Tang Li)
