HKU exhibition celebrates 80th anniversary of a literary classic
    2026-08-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TO mark the 80th anniversary of the publication of “The Little Prince” in France, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), in partnership with the Alliance Française de Hong Kong, presents a multigenerational exhibition, offering a sweeping thematic journey through the life and creative world of the legendary aviator-author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

More than a tribute to a beloved book, “The Little Prince and the Pilot” presents a rare, immersive portrait of Saint-Exupéry as a man of many facets — family man, friend, writer, painter, aviation pioneer, and explorer. Through a carefully curated selection of rare photographs, personal letters, maps, family mementos, manuscripts, and first editions, visitors are invited to discover the experiences and relationships that shaped his extraordinary vision.

At the heart of the exhibition lies the creation of “The Little Prince” itself. Original manuscripts, design drawings, and quotations trace the evolution of the iconic character and the story’s initial concepts, revealing the author’s deep philosophical reflections. Editorial materials and rare multilingual editions further illuminate the book’s journey from creation to global phenomenon. Highlights include a Hong Kong-exclusive display of life-sized character sculptures, offering visitors a unique opportunity for photographs and memorable keepsakes.

The exhibition unfolds in thematic chapters, beginning with Saint-Exupéry’s early years, his close friendships, and his burgeoning creative spirit. It then charts his parallel career as a pioneering aviator and wartime hero, with flight documents, military artefacts, and personal effects underscoring his contributions to aviation and his enduring sense of adventure. The narrative culminates in the birth of “The Little Prince.”

Complementing the exhibition, eight life-sized, full-color sculptures inspired by characters from the story are available for pre-order, offering collectors and fans a tangible celebration of the book’s lasting legacy.

First published in New York in 1943, “The Little Prince” tells the story of a young prince from Asteroid B-612 who leaves his home and beloved rose to travel the universe. Through the innocent gaze of a child, the book critiques the emptiness of the adult world while exploring timeless themes of love, friendship, and responsibility. Translated into over 300 languages and with more than 140 million copies sold worldwide, it remains one of the bestselling books of all time.

Dates: Through Oct. 18

Venue: The University Museum and Art Gallery, HKU, Hong Kong(SD News)
