The newly opened Fuyao cliffside glass elevator (L) stands alongside the older Qingyun elevator in Nizhuhe Grand Canyon in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province. The Fuyao elevator began operating last week and rises 288 meters, compared with 268 meters for the Qingyun elevator that has served the remote area since 2022. Together, the elevators have shortened students’ daily commute from more than three hours along a hazardous mountain trail to about 30 minutes. The elevators have also become a major attraction for visitors. Since the Qingyun elevator began operating, the canyon scenic area has welcomed more than 1 million tourists. With the addition of the Fuyao elevator, the two elevators can transport a combined 1,200 passengers per hour, increasing the area’s peak daily visitor capacity from 4,000 to 15,000.Xinhua |
