THE BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), China’s flagship civilian satellite network, has successfully concluded a comprehensive in-orbit upgrade, marking a significant step forward in its service quality and operational reliability. The upgrade was officially announced by the China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO), confirming that the system is now poised to deliver even more robust positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) data to users worldwide. Initiated in March, the upgrade process involved a meticulous series of technical adjustments. Engineers and ground controllers worked to optimize the working status of selected satellites, fine-tuning their performance to ensure maximum efficiency. According to the CSNO, the enhancements are not merely maintenance-based; they are part of a broader strategic vision. While fully guaranteeing the system’s stable day-to-day operations, the office emphasized that Beidou will continue to diversify and develop new navigation technologies, ultimately providing “more stable and reliable” services for the global community. This upgrade comes as BeiDou solidifies its status as a mature, fully functional, and high-performance global navigation system. Currently, more than 50 operational satellites are in active service, deployed across multiple types of orbits to maximize coverage and accuracy. The system’s technical specifications are impressive: It offers a global positioning accuracy of better than 10 meters, velocity measurement accuracy finer than 0.2 meters per second, and timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds. For users requiring ultra-precision, BeiDou’s Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service signal can achieve horizontal positioning accuracy better than 0.3 meters and vertical accuracy better than 0.6 meters, making it competitive with the world’s most advanced systems. Since its inception in 2000, the BeiDou project has grown exponentially. A total of 64 BeiDou satellites — including four experimental ones — have been launched on 47 Long March 3 series rockets from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province.
