SHOPEEPAY users can now use their familiar digital wallets to make payments in China under a new partnership between Shenzhen-based Tencent’s cross-border payments platform TenPay Global and ShopeePay, the companies have announced.

ShopeePay is a digital payment and financial services provider in Southeast Asia and Brazil.

The new service allows users to open either the ShopeePay or Shopee apps and scan a Weixin Pay merchant QR code or present their own payment code at participating stores. ShopeePay users can make purchases from tens of millions of Weixin Pay merchants across China.

The service is initially available to ShopeePay users in Singapore and Thailand. It is expected to expand gradually to additional Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Ploy Atcharanan, a visitor from Thailand, tried the new service at Uniwalk Shenzhen Qianhai shopping center. She said it meant she no longer needed to download additional payment apps. “All I need to do is pack my bags, and I can go anywhere in China,” she said.

“The service allows ShopeePay users to pay abroad as easily and conveniently as they do at home,” said Supphavit Hongamornsin, a ShopeePay executive. “As travel and trade between Southeast Asia and China continue to grow, we believe seamless cross-border payments will help users and businesses stay connected and create new opportunities for growth.”

As inbound consumption in China gains momentum during APEC China 2026, Tencent is helping develop a unified gateway for cross-border QR code payments. Through the gateway, TenPay Global is expanding a Weixin Pay service that enables overseas visitors to pay in China using their existing digital wallets. The platform is now connected to nearly 50 overseas wallet providers.

WeChat Pay HK, PayPal in the U.S., South Korea’s HanaPay and Travel Wallet, and Vietnam’s MoMo and ZaloPay have joined the gateway through TenPay Global.

Weixin Pay has also upgraded its service for linking international bank cards to the platform. Users who link an international bank card to Weixin Pay for the first time can receive a waiver of the 3% transaction fee for 90 consecutive days after completing their first purchase, subject to a daily spending limit of 1,000 yuan (US$148.71).
