AS children, we watched Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films for the adventure — floating castles, forest spirits, flying witches. As adults, the quiet ache of Joe Hisaishi’s scores and melodies seems to understand our unspoken weariness.

This Sunday afternoon, the Unicorn Symphony Orchestra will present a concert journey through the beloved soundtracks of Studio Ghibli.

From the ethereal rise of “Castle in the Sky” to the playful bounce of “My Neighbor Totoro,” from the steely pulse of “Howl’s Moving Castle” to the sweeping seas of “Ponyo,” the program weaves a rich tapestry of emotion. Tender strings mimic Totoro’s scamper; bold brass and percussion echo the heart of a moving fortress; woodwinds paint the boundless skies that Miyazaki so lovingly rendered. Audiences will also hear cherished themes from “Spirited Away,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” and “Princess Mononoke.”

This is not mere reproduction. The concert is crafted to reveal fresh dimensions of Miyazaki’s storytelling through live orchestration — familiar tunes gaining new weight when shared in a hall full of fellow dreamers, each carrying their own memories and hopes.

Founded in 2016, the Unicorn Symphony Orchestra brings together outstanding graduates from the Yale School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, and Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music. With more than 200 performances to their credit, they have collaborated with renowned musicians and conductors worldwide.
