Mak Yong Mak Yong, inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, originated in Kelantan, Malaysia, and evolved from ancient Malay court ritual theater. It combines singing, dance, chanting and storytelling, often depicting Malay myths and folktales. Female performers traditionally take the central roles, using graceful movements and archaic vocal styles to convey Malay cosmology and collective memory. Once performed at royal ceremonies and folk blessing rituals, Mak Yong remains a living expression of Malay heritage. |
