ONE of the world’s most celebrated musical institutions, the Vienna Boys Choir, will grace the Shenzhen stage in October. The concert is part of a series of events celebrating the choir’s own 100th anniversary of international touring, as well as the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Austria.

With a history that stretches back to 1498, when it was founded as the Imperial Court Chapel Choir, the ensemble has long been regarded as Austria’s “national treasure,” standing alongside the Vienna Philharmonic in terms of cultural prestige. The choir’s educational methods and choral traditions were recognized by UNESCO, being inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

The upcoming concert in Shenzhen will take audiences on a journey through the rich tapestry of German-Austrian music. The program features a diverse selection of classical masterpieces, folk songs, and modern favorites. It includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, such as the celebratory “Godiam la pace” from “Idomeneo” and the beloved “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” alongside Franz Schubert’s lyrical “Die Forelle” and Johann Strauss II’s iconic “The Blue Danube” waltz. The program also nods to Austrian musical traditions with folk songs like “S’orme Piabl” and “S’Innofeldmandl.”

Demonstrating the choir’s broad and evolving repertoire, the program extends beyond the classical canon to include world music. The choir will perform the Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower” and “Contentment” by the Taiwanese band Mayday. Other highlights include selections from film and musical theater, such as “Reflection” from Disney’s “Mulan,” “Carrying You” from Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle in the Sky,” and a medley from “The Sound of Music” including “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss.”
