French quartet to present masterpieces
    2026-09-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE internationally acclaimed Quatuor Van Kuijk, one of France’s most distinguished string quartets, is set to dazzle Shenzhen audiences on Oct. 17 with a concert that redefines the boundaries of classical repertoire.

Founded in 2012, Quatuor Van Kuijk brings together Nicolas Van Kuijk and Sylvain Favre-Bulle on violins, Adrien Boisseau on viola, and Anthony Kondo on cello. Their rise has been meteoric: In 2015, just three years after forming, they swept the top prizes at London’s Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and followed with wins at Trondheim and residencies at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Now regulars at the world’s finest concert halls, they have also earned critical acclaim for their debut album “Mozart,” which won France’s Classica Coup de Cœur and Diapason Découverte awards.

For the Shenzhen performance, the quartet has adopted a unique format. Instead of presenting complete quartets, they have handpicked iconic individual movements to create an evening of concentrated emotional impact. The program traverses a rich tapestry of human emotion — from Mozart’s suspenseful dissonance to the poignant nostalgia of Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, from the fiery passion of Smetana’s autobiographical masterpiece to the haunting depths of Shostakovich, with the expansive grandeur of Beethoven serving as a centerpiece.

Time: 8 p.m., Oct. 17

Venue: Music Hall, Guangming Culture and Art Center, Guangming District (光明文化艺术中心音乐厅)

Metro: Line 6 or 13 to Fenghuang Town Station (凤凰城站), Exit B(Tang Li)
