CHINESE authorities have unveiled a new five‑year action plan to accelerate the coordinated digital and green transformation of the economy and society, with artificial intelligence playing a central role in boosting energy efficiency and advancing low‑carbon development.

The plan, jointly issued by seven government departments, outlines 14 key tasks for the 2026–2030 period. By 2030, AI technologies are expected to achieve greater cost‑effectiveness and deeper integration with green innovation across industries, while energy efficiency in emerging sectors such as computing infrastructure and 5G base stations is set to improve markedly.

Digital and green upgrades will be pushed in agriculture, manufacturing, trade, consumption, and urban operations, using smart technologies to strengthen environmental governance and support high‑quality development. The initiative responds to a global wave of converging technological advances, with digitalization and green growth seen as major trends reshaping economies worldwide.

The coordinated push aims to fuse intelligent digital and green technologies, promote synergy between the digital and green economies, and cultivate new quality productive forces. Officials said the plan is a concrete step toward building a strong cyber nation and a beautiful China, ultimately underpinning the country’s broader green transition and international competitiveness.
