“DRAGON Boat Racing,” an original dance drama by the Guangdong Song and Dance Ensemble, will be staged at the Longgang International Arts Center from Oct. 10 to 11.

The contemporary production draws inspiration from the thousand-year-old tradition of dragon boat racing, marking the first reality-based theatrical work in China to interpret this cultural heritage. The narrative unfolds against the vibrant backdrop of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, centering on a determined female coach who assembles a team of young talents from across the region for an international competition. Through trials and triumphs, the story captures the spirit of unity and perseverance that defines China’s youth today.

The production weaves together the timeless melodies of Guangdong music with masterful choreography. Set in the 1930s, the drama follows the He brothers — renowned heirs of Guangdong’s musical tradition — and explores how their iconic composition “Dragon Boat Racing” evolves into a stirring anthem of resilience and hope.

Audiences can expect a visually stunning experience, with fluid dance sequences, intricate staging, and a rich palette of colors that bring the story to life. The production’s emotional depth and artistic excellence earned it the prestigious Wenhua Award in 2016, the highest governmental honor for professional performing arts in China.

The Guangdong Song and Dance Ensemble, with a legacy spanning more than six decades, has long been a pillar of the province’s cultural scene. The company has garnered numerous accolades, including the National Dance Competition’s Lotus Award and top honors at the Guangdong Arts Festival.
