Shekou cultural market to bring a taste of North America
    2026-10-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

NO long-distance trip is needed for a taste of North American culture this autumn. Shekou’s “Hello APEC Cultural Market — Experience North America” will open Sunday, bringing together Canadian and Mexican food, performances, crafts and interactive activities.

In the Canadian zone, visitors can relax with a cup of Tim Hortons coffee and sample Canadian favorites including poutine, butter tarts and Nanaimo bars. A maple slushy offers a cool, seasonal twist for Shenzhen’s lingering warmth. Local Canadian vendors will also showcase maple-leaf-themed crafts.

The Antenne du Québec à Shenzhen and Alliance Française à Shenzhen will also take part, with DIY badges, beaver dolls and fridge magnets on offer. Visitors can brush up on their French greetings, try floor hockey or padel tennis, and catch a comedy set by Kristin, a popular Canadian stand-up comedian known for her English-learning videos.

The Mexican zone will serve tacos, nachos and Mexican-style sausages, accompanied by Jarritos sodas, Corona beer and margaritas. A traditional mariachi band will bring live Latin rhythms to the bazaar. Visitors can also pose at a Lucha Libre wrestling photo booth, try skull-face painting inspired by Día de los Muertos, and browse hand-painted ceramic skulls, sombreros, tiny salamanders and handmade bracelets.

A local Spanish-language institution will invite visitors to learn to say “Hola.” Mexican residents will offer an unusual attraction of their own: handmade strawberry-flavored tequila prepared on-site.

Beyond the North American zones, the market will offer shaved ice, four-fruit soup and vegetarian food stalls. A showcase of China’s intangible cultural heritage will feature traditional ornaments.

An interactive stamp-collecting tour will connect the event’s themed areas. Visitors who collect stamps at designated spots can learn fun facts about APEC and redeem gifts.
