East meets West at Lyu Siqing violin recital
    2026-10-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WORLD-RENOWNED violinist Lyu Siqing will perform a powerful and lyrical program of Beethoven, Brahms and “The Butterfly Lovers” in a special one-night recital in Shenzhen.

“East meets West: Lyu Siqing Violin Recital” features one of China’s most celebrated soloists, accompanied by esteemed pianist Jin Wenbin.

In the first half of the concert, Lyu joins the young pianist to perform Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata No. 8 in G major, Op. 30 No. 3” and Brahms’ “Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108.”

Beethoven’s sonata unfolds in three movements, brimming with bright lyricism and the composer’s signature vitality and humor. Brahms’ final violin sonata, in four movements, carries the profound depth of German-Austrian Romanticism.

In the second half, Lyu will perform the celebrated violin concerto “The Butterfly Lovers.” In the 65 years since its debut, the work has been regarded as a treasure of Chinese national music, telling a tale of steadfast love through tender, haunting melodies and resounding in concert halls around the world. Lyu has recorded five versions of the work, selling millions of copies and earning recognition as the definitive interpretation.

Lyu is a virtuoso of international acclaim, best known as one of the earliest Asian winners of the gold medal at the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition. His powerful and poetic sound has graced the world’s most esteemed stages, including Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

He plays the 1734 Guarneri del Gesù “ex-Ricci” violin, whose rich, warm tone features on his widely admired recordings.

Jin Wenbin has placed among the top finishers in many international piano competitions. A graduate of the Yale School of Music and the New England Conservatory, he has toured nationally with Lyu regularly in recent years, their partnership honed to rare rapport.
