Trump suggests DMZ for meeting with Kim
    2018-05-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Singapore and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea could be possible sites for his upcoming meeting with top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un.

“We’re looking at various countries, including Singapore, and we are also talking about the possibility of the DMZ Peace House/Freedom House,” said Trump at a joint press conference at the White House with visiting Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

Trump was expected to meet Kim in the coming weeks, which could be another step forward for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula following a summit Friday between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The inter-Korean ice-breaking talks were held at Peace House, a building on the South Korean side of Panmunjom inside the 4-km-wide, 250-km-long DMZ.

Trump told reporters that his meeting with Kim at Peace House could hold larger significance than having talks in a third country.

“There’s something that I like about it because you’re there, you’re actually there, where if things work out, there’s a great celebration to be had on the site, not in a third-party country,” Trump added.

On Twitter, Trump also suggested he was considering the Peace House as the intended location.

He tweeted: “Numerous countries are being considered for the MEETING, but would Peace House/Freedom House, on the Border of North & South Korea, be a more Representative, Important and Lasting site than a third party country? Just asking!”

Moon-Kim meeting was the third-ever inter-Korean summit and Kim became the first DPRK leader to set foot on South Korean soil since the 1950-1953 Korean War ended in an armistice.

The DPRK was removing propaganda loudspeakers from the border area with South Korea in a bid to enforce the Panmunjom Declaration, announced after the inter-Korean summit last week, local media reported yesterday, citing the South Korean military.

An unidentified South Korean military official was quoted by local media as saying moves were spotted earlier in the day pulling back loudspeakers from the frontline areas.

The DPRK is reported to have operated about 40 fixed loudspeakers along the heavily fortified inter-Korean border to conduct psychological warfare against South Korea.

South Korea’s military, which had operated some 40 mobile and fixed loudspeakers, planned to remove them from 2 p.m. local time. South Korea’s anti-DPRK broadcast through the loudspeakers has already stopped April 23 ahead of the summit between Moon and Kim on Friday.(SD-Xinhua)
