THE 22 victims of the El Paso Walmart mass shooting were identified by police Monday, including a mother who was on her way to pick up her teenage daughter from the airport and a lifelong Dallas Cowboys football fan who raised her seven kids alone. El Paso Police released the names of the people murdered by accused gunman Patrick Crusius, 21, who allegedly opened fire both outside and inside the store with an AK-47-style assault rifle. The victims include 13 Americans, seven Mexican nationals, one German and one person with undetermined citizenship. The eldest victim is Luis Alfonzo Juarez, a 90-year-old U.S. citizen. Two of the injured were still in critical condition. At a press conference at the Mexican consulate in El Paso, Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard highlighted the need to address racism and white supremacy in the United States. “Since we consider this an act of terror, Mexican law allows Mexico to participate in the investigation,” Ebrard said. Crusius, the 21-year-old assailant, who opened fire at the Walmart mall largely catering to the local Mexican-American community, is believed to have been a white supremacist motivated by hatred for immigrants. Minutes before staging the mass shooting, Crusius was believed to have posted a manifesto against immigrants online. (Xinhua) |
