Man sentenced for sex assault of Alibaba employee
    2022-06-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN involved in sexual assault against an Alibaba female employee in July 2021 was sentenced to 18 months in prison yesterday, Global Times reported, citing a court rule in Jinan in East China’s Shandong Province.

The defendant, Zhang Guo, was found guilty of forcible indecency against a female employee surnamed Zhou of Alibaba during a business dinner while Zhou was under the influence of alcohol, Jinan Huaiyin District People’s Court said.

Zhang was a representative from a supermarket that was in talks for business dealings with Alibaba, the e-commerce giant.

Zhou accused Zhang and another male Alibaba colleague of plying her with alcohol. She said she was sexually assaulted at the dinner, and later again in her hotel room.

China Daily reported earlier that Zhou released details of the incidents in an internal post, complaining that Alibaba had not taken her accusations seriously.

Some 6,000 Alibaba employees have formed a discussion group to express their concerns about the case, which has attracted widespread public attention.

Shortly after, Alibaba fired the male colleague accused of assault and stated that it had zero tolerance over sexual assault.

Li Yonghe, president of Alibaba’s Hyperlocal Retail Business Group, and business group human resources staff member Xu Kun have resigned for failing in their duties.

Alibaba CEO Zhang Yong said in a memo that the case shamed all Alibaba personnel.

Regardless of gender, Alibaba unconditionally supports the right of employees to turn down requests that they drink alcohol when accompanying guests at dinner meetings, Zhang Yong said.

In December last year, Alibaba terminated Zhou’s employment, stating that she was dismissed for spreading false information about her assault after prosecutors dropped the case against the male colleague.
