Green consumption gains popularity in shopping spree

FOUR cities including Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi’an and Guangzhou have been regarded as first-tier carbon reduction cities, according to Cainiao Express logistics service during the Double 11 Global Shopping Festival period.

Data from Cainiao Express, Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, showed that consumers favored recycling.

The use of recycling boxes for half of the shopping festival period had reached 4 million, surpassing last year’s whole logistics period figure, according to a release from Cainiao.

“More people participated in the package recycling initiative. The number of recycling boxes used during the whole Double 11 logistics period was expected to reach 6 million, double last year’s number,” Wan Lin, CEO of Cainiao Express, said Friday. Cainiao partnered with many businesses to develop carbon emission reduction in full-chain green logistics from warehousing to dispatching.

Cainiao continued its “returning a packaging item and getting an egg” initiative at its 130,000 packaging recycling stations across the country since Nov. 1 to encourage consumers to swap packages for eggs. Packaging boxes left at the recycling stations were reused.

Consumers’ willingness toward green consumption was also seen in their behavior.

Data from JD.com showed that Guangdong topped in consumer spending, followed by Jiangsu, Beijing, Shanghai and Sichuan. Within Guangdong, the top three cities in terms of transaction volume were Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Dongguan. The three cities were also among the top five list of cities for new JD customers. Unlike previous years when consumers preferred to buy gold products and mobile phones, they bought more agricultural produce during this year’s Double 11 festival.

Data showed around 16.33 million people purchased green products through commercial platforms. Over 7 million users of https://goofish.com, known as a secondhand item platform, participated in used mobile phone evaluation and recycling.

The use of green electricity increased by 30% daily during the shopping spree period.
