CHINA’S Zheng Qinwen thrashed fifth seed and last year’s U.S. Open runner-up Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-4 Monday to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen native Wang Xinyu was knocked out by the 10th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in her maiden journey to the U.S. Open, but soared into the women’s doubles quarterfinals with Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei.

The 20-year-old Zheng meets Aryna Sabalenka, who is set to become the new world No. 1, or Russian 13th seed Daria Kasatkina in the last eight.

Zheng is the second-youngest player currently in the Top 40 of the WTA rankings, only behind 19-year-old Coco Gauff.

“I feel just super happy and excited to play in a big stadium. I had a really good performance today,” said Zheng.

Zheng is China’s first U.S. Open quarterfinalist since Wang Qiang in 2019. Two-time major champion Li Na reached the semifinals in New York in 2013 and Peng Shuai did the same a year later.(SD News)
