GATHERING some 18,000 young players, China’s first Student (Youth) Games opened in Nanning, South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Sunday night.

The Games is the result of a merger of the National Youth Games and the National Student Games as part of China’s endeavor to improve the country’s youth sports system, which is stated in a 2020 guideline on deepening the integration of sports and education to promote the healthy development of China’s youth.

ONE person was killed and another nine injured after a car crashed into multiple motorcycles and cars Sunday in South China’s Guangdong Province, according to local authorities.

The accident happened at around 7:52 p.m. in the city of Jieyang. All the injured have been sent to hospital for treatment and are not in critical conditions, according to the city’s public security bureau.

The police have held the driver involved in the accident and ruled out drunk or drug driving in the preliminary investigation.

Migratory cranes

OVER 20 migratory black-necked cranes, a species under first-class national protection in China, were recently spotted at a national nature reserve in the southwest province of Yunnan, marking the beginning of a new wintering period for the birds in the reserve.

Staff at the Yunnan Dashanbao National Nature Reserve observed three of the birds arriving Thursday. As of Saturday, 21 black-necked cranes had arrived, along with over 10 other migratory bird species, said the reserve’s administration bureau.
